Grab your running shoes and put on your helmet, the Big Ride for Palestine is back for another year. This popular event raises awareness about the situation in Palestine and funds for Palestinians. Starting in the UK in 2015, the Australian Big Ride for Palestine first took place in 2017, and since then, it has grown in popularity. Last year, 82 people in 11 teams across Australia took part, travelling over 8,200kms, and raising over $22,000 from over 390 donors.
The money raised was used to provide much-needed help to the Palestinian Womenโs Humanitarian Organisation (PWHO), which works in refugee camps in Lebanon. PWHO director, Dr Olfat Mahmoud, expressed her appreciation for the support. She told organisers, โThe funds will be used to continue the sport and psycho-social project in Beirut refugee camps (Shatila and Burj el Barajneh) which last yearโs Big Ride helped fund. There are 100 children participating, providing sporting opportunities to redress issues they are facing. Already the results are showing. The participating children have become more sociable, with increasing confidence, their school achievement is better, and they are less irritable and anxious.โ
The Big Ride for Palestine is more than just a cycling event; it is an opportunity to show solidarity with the Palestinian people and raise awareness of the injustices they are facing.
It is open to anyone who supports Palestinian human rights and enjoys cycling, running or walking.
Over two weeks, from September 2 โ 17, 2023, youโll be challenged to walk, run or ride your chosen distance while raising money.
Anyone can participate no matter where you are in Australia. You can take part as an individual, or with a team of friends and workmates. Registrations are open now. Itโs easy to set up your profile and start fundraising.
The Big Ride for Palestine is a powerful expression of solidarity and a reminder that the struggle for justice in Palestine is ongoing. By spreading the message of Palestinian rights, participants are making a meaningful contribution to the movement for peace and justice.
