Counter to Reclaim Australia
Reclaim Australia staged a number of rallies across Australia in favour of ‘traditional Australian values’. Nicole interviews Maurie (Brisbane Solidarity Network) who participated in the counter rally held last week (4 April 2015). Maurie and Nicole discuss people promoting fear in society, promoting fear of Muslims. Where does racism come from? Does Reclaim Australia have the right to free speech when they are preaching hate? What structural aspects of our society gave rise to the Reclaim Australia movement. Does staging counter-rallies only serve to give Reclaim Australia more oxygen?

Right of artists to say ‘No’ to apartheid
Ian interviews Jennifer Killen from Sydney Coalition for Justice and Peace in Palestine about the recent controversy about Marrickville’s Red Rattler theatre.

Questions:

1. Recently someone from Red Rattler Theatre wrote an email to the Pro-Israeli Hillel Group refusing to host groups that support colonisation and occupation of Palestine. Why was that email sent to the Hillel Group?

2. In reply an article from the Jewish News said that the Red Rattler Theatre is racist and discriminatory – what is yyour response to that?

3. The Hillel assistant director, Shailee Mendelvich said that she ished to hire the red rattler theatre for live story telling featuring poetry, musicians and actors on stage. Is Hillel a political organisation?

4. The Jewish board of deputies says  Hillel is ‘apolitical’ and provides educational, cultural and social activities to jewish students and young adults. By contrast, the jewush board of deputies accuses Red Rattler of practicing ‘divisiveness based on conflicts far from Australia. How do you respond to that?

5. In 2011 the Marrickville council decided to endorse the international boycott, divestments and sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel. This decision by council was later condemned by state and federal governments, do you think it strange that Hillel would approach Red Rattler? Was the theatre set up?

6. In April 2011 the Marrickville council backed down from its support of the BDS campaign and in its stead passed a resolution saying Marrickville council remains concerned about Palestinian Human Rights, do you think words are enough? Is there anything the council, Red Rattler or groups like your own could do better? Was the action by Red Rattler part of a cultural boycott of Israeli Apartheid.
