Palestine – The Negroponte Doctrine
At the end of WWII the dispossessed people of Europe required settlement away from the destruction of that war. Most went to the Americas and Australasia. The Jews of Europe were some of the worst victims of this war, and the Zionist movement seized the chance to fulfill their dream of the State of Israel.

The original UN resolution in 1947 recommended the creation of two independent Arab and Jewish States in Palestine. Europe and the United States in particular supported the establishment of an independent Jewish state in Palestine.

Since 1967, the UN General Assembly has passed frequent resolutions denouncing Israel’s expansion into the occupied territories. Some of these have called for international economic sanctions against Israel. The United States has always opposed these resolutions in the UN Security Council. This is known as the Negroponte doctrine, named after a previous US ambassador to the UN, John Negroponte.

The UN resolution passed in December 2016 calling on Israel to stop building settlements in the occupied territories was a response to the Israeli parliament (the Knesset) passing a law supporting the building Jewish settlements in the occupied territories.

The US may have abstained on this one occasion, allowing the vote to be passed, because the original ‘two-state-solution’ in 1947 was never fully implemented; and, after 70 years, it is plain ridiculous to claim that the US supports the establishment of a state of Palestine while it encourages Israel to build Jewish settlements in the occupied territories.

Based on past experience this resolution, like hundreds of others, will come to naught.
