Retrospective 2016

Andy and Ian do a roundup of 2016 stories.

Strike the beast hard
because if you don’t it will leave you hunger;
strike it because they’ll kill you
and they’ll cover you with earth,
sing your thousand songs
and set out walking with your wounds,
and together we’ll go to the forest
to sing, then, to life.

Palestine – The Negroponte Doctrine
At the end of WWII the dispossessed people of Europe required settlement away from the destruction of that war. Most went to the Americas and Australasia. The Jews of Europe were some of the worst victims of this war, and the Zionist movement seized the chance to fulfill their dream of the State of Israel.

The original UN resolution in 1947 recommended the creation of two independent Arab and Jewish States in Palestine. Europe and the United States in particular supported the establishment of an independent Jewish state in Palestine.

Since 1967, the UN General Assembly has passed frequent resolutions denouncing Israel’s expansion into the occupied territories. Some of these have called for international economic sanctions against Israel. The United States has always opposed these resolutions in the UN Security Council. This is known as the Negroponte doctrine, named after a previous US ambassador to the UN, John Negroponte.

The UN resolution passed in December 2016 calling on Israel to stop building settlements in the occupied territories was a response to the Israeli parliament (the Knesset) passing a law supporting the building Jewish settlements in the occupied territories.

The US may have abstained on this one occasion, allowing the vote to be passed, because the original ‘two-state-solution’ in 1947 was never fully implemented; and, after 70 years, it is plain ridiculous to claim that the US supports the establishment of a state of Palestine while it encourages Israel to build Jewish settlements in the occupied territories.

Based on past experience this resolution, like hundreds of others, will come to naught.

Activists defend refugee rights

The Murdoch Press has joined tirades from Federal parliamentarians to have protests banned from parliament. Leaving facts behind, the Courier Mail has bellowed loudly that refugee protests are ‘undemocratic’. Ordinary people must challenge this view for, without the right to assemble, march and organise, we have no say and all decisions are made for us by elites.

Here are some extracts from this week’s press hysteria:

“THE fate of screaming protesters who brought Federal Parliament to a halt on Wednesday lies in the hands of Speaker Tony Smith and Leader of the House, Christopher Pyne. For the AFP to lay any charges on the protesters, one of who allegedly bit the hand of a security guard, either Smith or Pyne have to make a complaint.Police have taken action against two protesters who abseiled Parliament House after their activist group hijacked Question Time yesterday.” – Courier Mail 1 Dec 2016.

Church does not ‘reject activist – Reverend David Baker – Moderator of the Uniting Church in Queensland:

Queensland Synod moderator Rev David Baker says the Uniting Church in Queensland does not reject activist Kelly Purnell as stated in The Courier-Mail today.

“While Ms Purnell does not work for Indooroopilly Uniting Church we thank her for her volunteer involvement in Indooroopilly’s visa form-filling clinic,” says Rev Baker.

Magistrate proud of protestors

During sentencing on (charges relating to ‘ November 21,(2016) Mr Morgan (magistrate in Pine Rivers) said, “… despite the fact that many people might disagree with your protest (dancing on Dutton’s roof), you have a valuable right in our community to protest and if one of my daughters was caught doing like you did, I’d probably be very proud of her.”

Qld Parliament on women’s democratic rights

Paradigm Shift 4zzz fm 102.1 friday at noon on 25 Nov 2016.

Rally to Decriminalise Abortion in Qld
Hosted by Women’s Abortion Rights Campaign Brisbane

Thursday, December 1 at 8 AM – 9 AM
Speakers Corner, outside Parliament House, George St Brisbane

There are currently two pieces of legislation before the Queensland Parliament concerning the democratic rights of women.

The Labor government has made a statement that it will introduce amendments to the transport act that it will it will ban sexist and misogynist slogans on commercial motor vehicles.

This legislation came about after a long campaign by community groups against John Webb’s wicked campervans which had slogans like “in every princess there is a little slut who wants to try it just once.”

Under the new legislation such  vehicles risk cancellation of their registration. The government has not gone so far as to ban all sexist and insulting images featuring women on advertisements like the Parmalat chocolate milk ads (Breakka).

The second piece of legislation was introduced in the parliament  by the independent member for Cairns, Rob Pyne to decriminalise abortion which has been in the criminal code of Qld since 1899.

What a contradiction! The Wicked Pickets have prompted the parliament to sanction misogynist ads on vans but not to have party political support to stop the criminalisation of women, their partners and their doctors performing an abortion.

Here is the Paradigm Shift interview with Anna McCormack from the Women’s Abortion Rights Campaign.

Amanda Bradley from Children by Choice spoke at the November rally in support of the campaign.

Will the Parliament finally get rid of this 100 year restriction on women’s rights to choose?

No return to danger – Sri Lanka is not safe

Paradigm Shift 4zzz fm 102.1 broadcast on 11 Nov 2016 at noon.

“The Australian government has used a short-cut screening process known as ‘enhanced screening’ that expedites the removal of asylum seekers with no genuine and fair procedures to claim and assess asylum, and no monitoring to ensure the safety of people who return. The cooperative relationship Australia has with Sri Lanka is jokingly referred to as AusLanka. Sri Lanka is a refugee-producing country and ironically, also a refugee-hosting country now deporting Pakistani Christians.” –Australia’s treatment of asylum seekers: Reflections from visit to Sri Lanka

Ian interviews former Dept of Immigration officer now migration agent, Rebecca Lim, and Tamil Priest, Fr Pan Jordan, about Australia’s unfair refugee policies … rally Saturday 12 Nov 2016  at 11am Raddacliffe Place, Brisbane city organised by the Tamil Refugee Action Group.

Placard at rally to decriminalise abortion outside Qld Parliament 3 Nov 2016
Thank you, life, for giving me so much.
She gave me laughter as well as mourning.
With both I distinguish happiness from pain -
Two of the ingredients that confirm my singing,
As well as your song, that is mine too,
And the song of all, that is my own singing.
Thank you, life, for giving me so much. - Violeta Parra
Both birth and death are political, in Queensland at least.

Campaign to decriminalise abortion

In a world where the Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane, Mark Coleridge, says that abortion will be reduced to a ‘trivial procedure‘ independent member for Cairns, Rob Pyne, is trying to introduce a bill to decriminalise abortion. The reason? Women in Queensland are being denied the democratic right of control of their own bodies.

Under the Qld Criminal Code of 1899, for a woman to procure a miscarriage is a crime with a maximum punishment of 7 years imprisonment.

Here is a speech by Anna McCormack (Women’s Abortion Rights Campaign) calling on Qld MPs to pass a bill to decriminalise abortion.

The rally was held outside Qld parliament on 3 Nov 2016).

Zen and the art of dying
Ian interviews a filmmaker (Debra Beattie) and a deathwalker (Zenith Virago) about the need for change in cultural practices around dying.

eugen_herrigel_-_zen_in_the_art_of_archery

What has this quote from German Philsosopher Eugen Herrigel got to do with dying?

“The archer ceases to be conscious of herself as the one who is engaged in hitting the bull’s-eye which confronts her. This state of unconscious is realized only when, completely empty and rid of self, she becomes one with perfecting of her technical skill, though there is in it something of a quite different order which cannot be attained by any progressive study of the art.”
